Jim Bawden
Jim Bawden has been on the North Scott staff for 26 years, teaching
8th grade band, jazz band, and woodwind and percussion lessons at
North Scott Junior High School. He also serves as the district's music
liaison. Under his direction, bands have performed for IBA conferences
in 1981(J.B. Young Junior High) and in 1994 (North Scott Junior
High), at the IMEA state conference in 1985, in 1989 and in 1993,
and for the ASBDA national convention in 1997. The 8th Grade
Percussion Ensemble has appeared twice for the IBA conference. Jim
has been guest conductor for a variety of groups such as the Orpheus
Festival at Simpson College, both NCIBA and NEIBA honor bands, 11
times at International Music Camp, and twice for All-State Music
Camp.
Prior to his position at North Scott, Jim taught at Davenport J.B.
Young Junior High School and its 4 elementary schools from 1976
to 1981. He also served as assistant director at Davenport
West High School from 1976-1978. His first teaching assignment
was at Nishna Valley, Hastings, Iowa, from 1974-1976. He has taught
at the college level including St. Ambrose University jazz band,
St. Ambrose University percussion, Augustana College percussion
and Cornell College percussion.
He received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1973 and Master of
Arts in percussion performance in 1978, both from The University
of Iowa. He also is an MENC Nationally Certified Music Educator
and winner of Scott County's Golden Apple award. He served
14 years as principal percussionist with the Quad City Wind Ensemble
and 4 years as percussionist with the Quad City Symphony .
Jim is Past-President of the Iowa Bandmasters Association. He
has held positions on IMEA and ASBDA boards as well. His professional
memberships are SEIBA (past president), IBA, MENC, IMEA (middle
school music state chair and district representative), PAS, NEA,
ASBDA (national convention steering committee), and IAAE.
