Guest Artist Program 
Officially starting in 2002, this program gives NSHS band students the opportunity to work and/or perform with top professional musicians. Some of these artists just “stop by”, while others are hired as guest performers / clinicians. For these hired individuals, the students help to raise money and hold a Jazz-a-thon to cover expenses. During the past 7 years, NSHS students have had an opportunity to work and/or perform with notables such as Byron Stripling, Stefon Harris, Victor Goines, Frank Wess, Wycliffe Gordon, The Boston Brass, Melton Mustafa, Dennis Mackrel, Kurt Elling, Javon Jackson, Terrell Stafford, Hamiet Bluiett, Victor Mendoza, Eddie Henderson, Bill Bell, The Glorian Duo, and Guaranteed Swahili. On May 12, they will present a concert with pianist Reggie Thomas and his wife Mardra, who is a jazz vocalist. The Northern Illinois University Jazz Ensemble also swings by NSHS as part of their November tour, with the exception of this past year, when Orquesta Alto Maiz shared the stage with the NSHS Jazz Department. |
