Download course syllabus

Jazz Theory / Improvisation was created to help students develop an understanding of the many facets of jazz improvisation, including important figures in history, chord symbol identification, form, and building facility on their primary instrument to properly demonstrate these concepts.

At the close of the first semester, enrolled students will compose a piece and score it out for their jazz combo to perform the following semester. The final project for the second semester is a composition or arrangement for full jazz band, done either individually or as a group. Each will take the necessary steps to obtain a copyright for these arrangements / compositions, and will perform them with Jazz 1 at the following November concert.

Co-requisite:
Students must be enrolled Jazz Band and participate in a jazz combo.

Pre-Requisite:
It is recommended (but ultimately at discretion of director) that students take Music Theory before enrolling in this course.
