2008-09 All-State Jazz Ensemble Information

The audition recordings will consist of two required components (Major Scales and Etudes) and one optional (Improvisation)

The Etudes (written by Dr. Bob Washut) are available as FREE DOWNLOADS (scroll down) on this page.  
We also have downloadable .mp3 files of the etudes as recorded by UNI Jazz One, under the direction of Chris Merz.

The JEI board has decided not to require improvisation this year.  It will obviously be more beneficial to those who do submit at
least some blues, but we don’t want it to be a factor that will keep students from auditioning.  So, with that being said, the blues (in F
or Bb) and Bb rhythm changes are optional.  Those submitting improvisation portions do not need to play a head along with it- just
send in a few choruses of blues and a chorus or two of Bb rhythm changes.  We have come to this decision based on evaluating
numbers of past participants and wanting to make this opportunity as accessible as possible.  We have also examined other honors
jazz ensemble audition procedures from around the country.
